Frequently Asked Questions
Here we answer some frequently asked questions about HVAC.
1.How often do I need to change my air filters?
A good rule of thumb is to change your air filter once a month. However, this can vary based on factors like your location and the amount of dust, pet dander, and other contaminants in your environment. Check your filter regularly, and if it looks dirty, replace it.
2.What size unit do I need?
Determining the right size heating and cooling unit depends on several factors, including your home's design, insulation, and attic space. If your system is too large, your home may become too humid, leading to moisture and mold issues. If it's too small, it will run constantly, increasing energy costs. A qualified technician can assess your home and recommend the proper unit size.
3.If I replace my outdoor unit, do I need to replace the indoor unit too?
In most cases, yes. Outdoor air conditioner or heat pump units are designed to work with matched indoor units. Mixing old and new units can reduce efficiency and performance. If your indoor unit is as old as the outdoor one, it’s likely nearing the end of its lifespan as well. Replacing both units together can save you money on future energy bills and comes with a system-wide warranty.
4.Should I cover my unit in the fall and winter?
Covering your unit can keep debris from accumulating, but it can cause problems if the unit is turned on while covered. If you plan to leave for an extended period and turn the unit off, it's safe to cover it—just make sure to disconnect the power first.
5.Why should I replace my R-22 unit with an R410A unit?
R-22 refrigerant is being phased out due to environmental regulations, making it more expensive and harder to find. Upgrading to an R410A system now can save you from future hassles and rising costs.
